On Tuesday, June 17th, George Washington Carver High School of Engineering and Science celebrated Commencement Exercises for the 31st graduating class. The Class of 2014 is sending students to Princeton, University of Pennsylvania, Harvard, Temple, Drexel, Howard, Pitt, Penn State and many more colleges and universities. Congratulations to all of our graduates and best wishes for a bright future.
The Carver HSES community gathered on Sunday, June 22 for our Greenhouse Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. The new Greenhouse was designed and built by the Engineering students of the Class of 2014. C. Culmer, A. Heard and J. Scott of the Class of 2014 were joined by SDP Chief Technology Officer Melanie Harris, Principal Ted Domers, Alumni and PECO Manager Derrick Williams, and Solomon Wheeler, Parent.

Carver HSES is proud to serve as an inaugural chapter of the Women of Tomorrow Mentoring Program in Philadelphia with Ms. Logan
coordinating our program. The introductory meeting at Carver HSES included 25 9th and 10th grade students who met with
Dr. Susan Taylor of Society Hill Dermatology and Stephanie Stahl, Health Reporter CBS3. The group will begin to meet monthly as
well as incorporate mentoring activities will include job shadowing, internships, and college visits. This program will provide the young
women at Carver HSES a tremendous opportunity to develop a strong network and grow into successful professionals in their fields of interest.
On Saturday, September 27, the Carver HSES community gathered for its 2nd Annual Beautification Day. The day was led by Mr. Latchford and the "Green Team" and was held in conjunction with the national Green Apple Day of Service. During our event, we planted mums around our campus and placed recycling bins in every classroom. In addition, our new Greenhouse received final upgrades and we planted our first batch of flowers and vegetables in it. Thank you to everyone who came out to support the Carver Home and School Association at the Dave and Busters’ fundraiser. The fundraiser was held on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at the Columbus Boulevard location. Ronnie Winfield (President) and Christine Gordon (Vice President) volunteered for the event and were presented with the $500 contribution, which will be used to offset the cost of our Winter Wonderland Dance. Remember to support us at our 2015 Dave and Buster fundraisers, scheduled for January 19 and February 27 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Dave and Buster Franklin Mills location.

The Engineering & Science Chess Club was chosen by After School Activity Partners to host their acceptance of the GSK Impact Award. The entire ASAP leadership attended, led by Marciene Mattleman, ASAP Board chair and Executive Director Justin Ennis.

Superintendent Dr. William Hite presented the Governor’s Award to Mr. Domers and the top students in the Class of 2014. Carver HSES was one of only 3 high schools in Philadelphia recognized for their top 10% School Performance Profile. Congratulations to the entire E&S community.
On November 19th HSES had a Hat Day fundraiser. This event raised money for the Make A Wish Foundation in honor of Zahir Avery,
a member of the Class of 2016 who passed away in August. Through Make a Wish he and his family went to Paris last Spring. Many people
remember Zahir as wearing a hat, so staff and students donated money and wore hats that day. The E & S community raised over $500 in
Zahir's name. It was a great way for his friends to remember him.

Carver High School of Engineering and Science celebrated its No. 2 ranking among Philadelphia public schools with a pep rally this week in the gymnasium. The ranking came in a new state list of school performance profile scores.

The conference was designed to ignite interest in science careers and to increase the number of students pursuing careers in science and cancer research.
This week, thanks to the ACE Mentoring Program, several of our students completed their first level of OSHA certification. Ms. Logan did a great deal of "behind the scenes" work to coordinate the program, and Mr. Koehler led the group on site. This certification provides our students an important certificate as they move into Engineering and Construction related careers. It is a key indicator to the success of our CTE program.

The grant is expected to benefit 80 students annually through the Saturday STEM Scholars program, a yearlong bi-weekly program for middle school students.

Students were greeted by Mayor Nutter, Dr. Hite and other dignitaries as they entered the building on opening day. The citywide Bell Ringing ceremony to open the school year was held at E&S with a special welcome to our new middle years students. Watch the 6ABC report.
About 40 students, staff, alums, friends, family, and dogs walked the 5K today. E&S donated approximately $900 to the AIDS Fund. Congrats to senior Tho Nguyen who (for the second consecutive year) was our top fundraiser and earned an official AIDS Fund hoodie.

The greening of E&S continues as a team of 60 students, staff and parents completed a number of projects: planting mums, filling and planting a new
garden box, greenhouse renovations and recycling signage. Much thanks to our dedicated volunteers.

Carver E&S partners with Beyond School Walls Mentoring Program
We are proud to connect over 20 freshman and sophomores with local entrepreneurs and STEM innovators around Philadelphia. In partnership with Big Brothers, Big Sisters, our students meet bi-weekly with their mentor with the intention of staying connected over the course of their high school experience. We are thrilled to have this new mentoring program.

from Carver Engineering & Science re-imagined the Comcast Innovation and Technology Center,

MS Debate Team Shines
On December 20th, 2015 the E&S Cheer Team competed at the PIAA Philadelphia Public League Competitive Spirit City Championship. The team placed 1st in the Large Varsity Division and received a bid to compete at the PA State Competitive Spirit Championship on January 22nd-23rd in Hershey, PA. E&S Design Teams Compete Nationally
Three engineering design teams from our school to compete in national championships. The ACE Mentor team competed in Washington, D.C. The SeaPerch Team will travel to Louisiana State Univ. and the MESA Robotics Team will be competing in Ogden, Utah.
Carver E&S alum Kai Tinsley was one of 55 high school seniors from across the region to receive college scholarships from the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

First Annual Briggs JV Basketball Tourney
Friere Charter, Masterman, Central and E&S competed in the 2 day showcase. E&S defeated Masterman on Friday and Central on Saturday. MVP of the team was Sophomore Steven Dao. Freshman, Aaron Rascoe was honored as the overall showcase MVP!
"Rest in Power" Book Talk
Carver E&S attended the "Rest in Power" Book Talk, at the Free Library of Philadelphia. Students dialogued with the parents of the late Trayvon Martin about the death of their son, the Black Lives Matter movement and the status of politics and justice in our country today. Each student received a signed copy of the newly published story of Martin's life and had the opportunity to shake the hands (and share hugs) with of the parents of the young man.
